SMT’s 37 years of experience developing next-level technology for the live sports industry has led to the creation of OASIS (Organization of Asynchronous Sports Information Subsystems), a powerful organizing philosophy centered around an extraordinary data management system.
OASIS as an organizing philosophy views the data landscape of a sports league and/or event in three (3) layers:
Level 0 All subsystems that create data or video
Level 1 The central hub that absorbs, collates, synchronizes, organizes, expands, and distributes
all Level 1 data via push and query APIs
Level 2 All subsystems that consume, present, or use the data
OASIS’ organizing philosophy defines a simple, intuitive, approach to a sports league or event’s data governance and data management but requires a highly disciplined, central authority to maintain the proper separation of the layers and to maintain functional independence between layers for a sports league/event to gain the full benefits of the OASIS organizing philosophy.
OASIS is agnostic as to whether there is a single vendor or multiple vendors supplying the various subsystems at Level 0 or Level 2. The OASIS organizing philosophy ensures all subsystem suppliers maintain functional independence, communicate clearly to others and receive the full benefit of their participation.
As a product, the OASIS Platform is a highly integrated, multi-venue/court, time-synchronized, multilevel, data management system that SMT architected, designed and created to provide professional sports leagues and events with a centrally controlled and league-controlled platform to organize, maintain, administer, and manage all phases of the league or event’s data creation, data distribution, data visualization, and data monetization.
The OASIS Platform presents a data strategy success path for The Championships at Wimbledon.
The OASIS solution is all-inclusive, future-proof and component agnostic, allowing AELTC the flexibility to integrate technologies from third-party vendors and integrate new technologies that become available. Some components of OASIS are currently in place in SMT tennis applications being used for The Championships.
The OASIS Platform will give AELTC the ability to control its data and video rights more directly while maximizing its ability to monetize those rights with third parties.
SMT design to optimize the data flow based on APIs structure:
RTP API or Realtime Time Push so that data is instantly available for consumption
REST API so that data is automatically stored and available for query
Per this design to organize, normalize, and streamline the data workflow, SMT can then focus separately on the management of the data live vs historical data.
Along with the treatment of the data via API, SMT has the ability to monitor the location tracking data, analyze it, and correct it if needed. We call this process “smoothing of the data” as it allows us to fill in any gap for a consistent frame of data.
Since SMT OASIS ecosystem has the ability to ingest multiple video feeds through our SMT Tandem server, and then stamp the video with synchronized timecodes, we have the ability to create live replays and highlights via our OPTICS Pro proprietary software. OPTICS Pro provides the client with the ability to automatically create a highlight or a replay from the video stored on the SMT Tandem server.
EDGE is the SMT data analytics platform at Level 2. SMT will develop algorithms (per client input) in our eventing engine at Level 1 to create unique and new statistics for the recipients/consumers. These new statistics are available via EDGE.
Monetizing Data Rights
The SMT OASIS Platform provides a client with full and centralized control of data distribution to any recipient, allowing the client to set data pricing value in exchange for data rights. SMT OASIS gives rightsholder centralized and absolute control of all data and valued-added information with the ability to monetize rights through SMT’s interfaces with rightsholders’ third- party clients.
Future Proofing of the Data
The SMT OASIS Platform focuses on data integration, integrity, quality and validation, providing a client with authenticated data and establishing the only official source of data. The structure of the OASIS Platform is agnostic to third-party sources and therefore can remain intact as clients change suppliers and vendors, guaranteeing a future-proofed investment.

OASIS provides full flexibility and customization at any level, with the ability to ingest any input, develop custom algorithms, create new data sets or packages, validate and distribute desired data. EVENT-CENTRALZED DATA COLLECTION
Agnostic: OASIS takes data input from any source provider(s).
Unlimited Input: OASIS has the flexibility to intake existing and/or new data and link data to timecodes.
Input Independence: Input Independence: OASIS offers a set of native data protocols that allow a third-party vendor to supply tracking, scoring, and other types of data. If a third-party vendor is unable to supply data using one of these OASIS native data protocols, OASIS can be customized to parse that vendor’s specific data format.
Input Connectivity: OASIS can receive Level 0 data using a variety of industry-standard connection types, including UDP, TCP, HTTP POST, WebSockets and SignalR.

OFFICIAL DATA FOUNDATION
Data Normalization: Data is normalized into a standard OASIS format so that it is easily digestible at Level 2. Furthermore, the OASIS normalization assures that Level 2 consumers are not affected when Level 0 data providers are changed.
Data Synchronization: All Level 0 data sources are synchronized onto a common timeline. This allows events from each disparate Level 0 data source to be correlated and used to calculate new information such as unique events, statistics, and analytics. This synchronization also allows data to be correlated with video.
Data Validation: Per the needs of the customer, OASIS can provide specific data validation capabilities, e.g., range checking, thresholding, and gap analysis.
Data Enhancement: OASIS can smooth and interpolate tracking data in order to provide a higher quality output for Level 2 consumers.
Data Analytics: Via the built-in Intelligence Engine framework, OASIS can calculate and generate new events, statistics, and analytics that can be seamlessly distributed via OASIS APIs.

REAL-TIME DATA DISTRIBUTION
Data Distribution Control: OASIS allows the client to control the distribution of data using APIs and/or RESTful RTPs.
Unlimited Platform Distribution: OASIS lets the client distribute data to any desired platform, e.g., web, TV, and displays.
Broadcast enhancements: OASIS allows for automated event-based choreography of (virtual) graphical inserts based on tracking and official scoring data.
Developer-friendly APIs: OASIS supports the querying of data using REST APIs. These types of APIs are recognizable by most application developers. Real-time push APIs are driven via SignalR and other standard communication methods such as TCP and WebSockets.

OASIS PLATFORM CASE STUDY
NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
The OASIS Platform is the central component of the NHL’s next-generation data infrastructure, leveraging the full benefits of SMT’s NHL HITS Scoring System and Puck and Player Tracking (PPT) data for all NHL stakeholders, including NHL broadcasters.
The Eventing Intelligence Engine Inside OASIS, the EIEIO, is the core component of the OASIS Platform.
The EIEIO integrates and synchronizes the PPT data with the HITS data to produce the Official NHL Stats.
The EIEIO provides automatic live detection of hockey “events”, e.g., passes, player possession, shots, goals, time on ice, etc.
SMT’s solution suite for NHL broadcast partners debuted at the 2019 NHL All-Star Game and includes systems to seamlessly integrate PPT and eventing data into the three (3) key functional areas of the broadcast presentation of a live NHL game.

NHL ALL-STAR GAME
In the video that follows, you will see how all the information from the OASIS Platform comes to life for the NHL. The OASIS “Quad Split” video has four components:
Upper right quadrant: Our tracking video allows the user to see that all players and the puck are being properly tracked and tagged.
Lower right quadrant: One of two multipurpose and interactive portions of the video controller allows the user to see (and change between) various screens including:
The graphical interface screen where operators can insert virtual elements in real time;
A Commentator Information Screen (CIS);
A data analysis screen that confirms the system is receiving data as planned and measures the real-time quality of the data being received against agreed-to protocols;
An eventing screen that recognizes data and newly created events as they occur; and
A script editor that allows the operator to change instructions to the system for insertion of virtual elements and/or pre-programmed instant replay scripts.
Lower left quadrant: This quadrant is similar to the lower right-hand quadrant in that it allows the operator to toggle between screens. This video clip demonstrates the real-time generation of automated events being created through the OASIS Platform’s live eventing engine.
Upper left quadrant: Displays the real-time output of the system; this output will be highlighted in future videos showing the application.
