SMT and the NHL

SMT's History in Hockey Highlights

  • SMT designed, developed, and deployed the first real-time 3-D tracking system for pucks and players

  • SMT produced the "Glowing Hockey Puck" for FOX Sports coverage of NHL games

  • SMT designed, developed, and deployed "HITS" the NHL's Official Scoring System

  • ​SMT has provided National, Regional, and International broadcasters of NHL games with live scorebug technology since 1995.


Following the success of the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, the NHL asked SMT to propose an approach and an architecture to leverage an NHL league-wide tracking system with the goal of providing VIRTUALf/x graphics capabilities to every NHL broadcaster for every NHL game.

SMT's Proposal:

  1. Install and deploy SMT's OASIS Platform into all NHL Arenas.

  2. Update SMT’s HITS to a next-generation version that would exploit tracking data

  3. Install and deploy SMT's league-wide, single-click, Virtual F/X Architecture

The Current State of the SMT and NHL Relationship

SMT is under contract to:

  1. Install and deploy SMT's OASIS Platform into all NHL Arenas.

  2. Update HITS to a next-generation version that exploits PPT (tracking) data

  3. Install the SMT single-click, VIRTUAL f/x Architecture for the 2019 NHL All-Star Game

SMT is currently bidding to:

  1. Install SMT’s single-click, VIRTUALf/x Solution in every NHL arena

  2. Provide SMT’s VIRTUALf/x Solution to every NHL Broadcaster at every NHL game

  3. Provide an SMT trained VIRTUALf/x staff person in every NHL arena for each game

SMT's OASIS Platform

The OASIS Platform is the central component of the NHL’s next-generation data infrastructure and leverages the full benefits of PPT data for all NHL stakeholders including NHL broadcasters.

  • The Eventing Intelligence Engine Inside OASIS, the “E.I.E.I.O”, is the core component of The OASIS Platform.

  • The E.I.E.I.O. integrates and synchronizes the PPT data with the HITS data to produce the Official NHL Stats.

  • The E.I.E.I.O. provides automatic live detection of hockey “events”, e.g., passes, player possession, shots, goals, time on ice, etc.

The OASIS Platform organizes the NHL’s data infrastructure and systems into three levels.

Player and Puck Tracking for NHL Broadcast Partners

Situational Analysis

The NHL has invested millions of dollars in a live Player and Puck Tracking (PPT) system.

Statement of Challenges

  1. NHL Broadcast Partners have historically expressed resistance to using live VIRTUALf/x.

  2. The fast pace of NHL play relative to the pace of other professional sports that use tracking systems, e.g., NFL and NBA, has caused NHL Broadcast Partners to express disbelief that PPT data can be effectively integrated into their production workflow in a timely, meaningful and positively impactful way.

  3. If NHL Broadcast Partners cannot use the PPT data as a "natural" component within their current production workflow then NHL viewers will not see the benefits of the NHL's investment in the PPT technology.

  4. If NHL Broadcast Partners do not see the value and benefit of integrating PPT data into their productions, then the NHL fans will not see and enjoy the visual, informational, and analytic benefits of PPT data.

SMT’s Solution for Packaging PPT Data for NHL Broadcast Use

  1. SMT created a PPT data architecture and solution suite to meet the needs of NHL broadcast partners.

  2. SMT solutions and systems:

    • ​harness the power of the PPT data for the benefit of NHL Broadcast partners

    • package the PPT data in ways that NHL Broadcast partners can easily use it

    • integrate PPT data into an NHL broadcast partners current production workflow

    • promote the use of PPT data across multiple points of the NHL Broadcast partners production

    • provide NHL Broadcast Partners with control over the implementation of their own VIRTUALf/x

    • provide for automatic graphic creation using PPT data and artificial intelligence “Eventing”

  3. SMT created a solution suite that allows NHL Broadcast Partners to naturally evolve the use of the PPT           data within the current workflow of their NHL Broadcast Production

SMT Service and Support for NHL Broadcast Partners

SMT provides every NHL Broadcast Partner with a dedicated Account Manager to serve as the primary point of contact and communication for everything the broadcast partner needs. SMT client support is provided via a three-tiered approach and structure:

  • Tier 1 – SMT Help Desk – Is a 24/7 help desk support line where SMT trained support technicians will work with the caller to assess the issue and in most cases provide an immediate resolution.

  • Tier 2 – SMT On-site Venue Technician – For unresolved Tier 1 issues or for issues that require on-site technical assistance, the SMT Help Desk will reach out to the SMT On-site Venue Technician to physically go to the Mobile Unit to assist.

  • Tier 3 – 24/7 access to SMT Engineering – In the very rare instances where the SMT Help Desk and the On-site Venue Technician are unable to resolve an issue, SMT provides dedicated Engineering personnel that are available to provide high-level engineering support.

​The dedicated SMT Account Manager and the Three-Tiered support approach ensure that all broadcast partner issues are promptly addressed and remedied.
